The meaning of making connections between human experience and location is on Walter Hyleck's mind as he creates the platters seen on this site. He says, "They are formal abstractions of physical places and are informed by the geological events and the visual remains of those events." Thus it seems quite appropriate that he work with clay, stone, and fire.

Hyleck says "The finished pieces are images of contast. They contain aggressive textures which hide and reveal hints of intense color. Their interior and exterior contours curve and taper as if reflecting separate influences. Images form, dissolve, and re-form into structures, which are implied more than stated.

They are about truth and facts and observations that conflict with one another, according to our point of view, giving way to realization, acceptance, and denial. They're about this place. My place. Your place. Our place."

Mr. Hyleck received his BA degree in Art & Art History from the University of Minnesota, Duluth in 1965 and his MFA in Ceramics & Art History from Tulane University, New Orleans, LA in 1967.

He is currently Professor of Fine Art and the Director of the Ceramic Apprenticeship Program at Berea College in Berea, Kentucky. He has participated in over 200 solo, invitational, & juried exhibitions around the country. His work can be found in both private, public and museum collections.
