Vennita Cantrell finds collage and assemblage best suited for her means of expression. She feels the assemblage of objects and images from the past represents a nostalgic longing for a bygone era.
She has begun to incorporate her own figural drawings into each piece and enhances the works with additional painting and/or drawing. She works in a very detailed and meticulous fashion creating works imbued with spiritual and mystical aspects. One can almost always find bird, butterfly and other animal motifs in her creations. For Cantrell, these images of birds and butterflies symbolize the spirit or soul trapped and contained behind glass as if on display in a department store window for all to see.
“I hope to create a sense of mystery, curiosity and childlike wonderment allowing the viewer to indulge in voyeuristic curiosity.”
She was born in Nebraska, raised in Bardstown, Kentucky and received her Bachelor’s degree in Art from the University of Northern Illinois, Dekalb, in 1990. Prior to establishing her first art studio in Decatur, Georgia, she worked in a variety of areas such as events planning, & visual merchandising. In 1999 she moved to Louisville, Kentucky where she continues to work as a studio artist.
Her work has been exhibited in both juried and solo exhibitions. As an emerging artist, Ms Cantrell's work has garnered several awards and is included in many private collections in this region.
